The humble Petition of certain Indian

Guards, Warders and Assistant Wardere

of Victoria Gaol.

Showeth as follows:-

1. Your Petitioners are natives of India and are employed

respectively as Guards Warders and Assistant Warders in Victoria

Gaol.

2.

The pay which your Petitioners receive at the present time

is practically the same as the pay given to them or to the then

Warders and Guards of Victoria Gaol fourteen years ago when the

purchasing power of the dollar in Hongkong was far greater than

ite present purchasing power.

3.

The pay of the European staff of Victoria Gaol at the present time is very considerably greater than it was fourteen years ago and in addition to their increase of pay exchange compensation has been granted in the case of that staff whereas

no such compensation has been awarded to your Petitioners.

4.

In consequence of the decreased value of the dollar as above mentioned the pay which your Petitioners receive is barely

sufficient to provide them with the necessaries of life.

5.

The work which your Petitioners are engaged is of an
